Homework assignments

Homework will be assigned (every one or two weeks) and collected, but it will not be graded. Nominal credit will be given for submitting your solutions for the homework problems (5% of the course grade for submitting all homework sets). Solutions to several homework exercises will be discussed during the sections and, for some problems, during the lectures. Working on the homework problems will enable you to develop facility in statistical thinking through regular practice. Moreover, it will provide early and regular feedback on your performance in the course through the solutions discussed during the sections, lectures, and office hours. Please plan to work consistently throughout the quarter on the homework problems, attempting to solve them before they are discussed in sections or class. The capacity to independently solve homework problems is a strong predictor for good performance in the exams.

To ensure a common deadline for all students (regardless of the day of their discussion section or TA office hours), we will collect homework on the three exam days (and only on those days). It will therefore be 2-3 homework sets that you will be submitting on each exam date, and that will be a strict deadline for those homework sets.
